Sara Errani puts a positive spin despite Open humiliation
Sara Errani insisted she had enjoyed her 6-0, 6-1 French Open humiliation at the hands of Serena Williams despite her brutal 46-minute capitulation.
Williams put on an awesome display which saw her fire 40 winners past the Italian.
“I enjoyed it,” said 26-year-old Errani, the fifth seed who had made the final last year. “It was a great court, great weather. She is so strong and is an unbelievable player.”
Evert’s 6-0, 6-0 mauling of Camille Benjamin in 1984 remains the worst hammering handed out in a Roland Garros semi-final.
Errani, who has now lost all six matches she has played against the American, won just five points on the Williams serve and hit only two, lonely winners.
“It was a great day. I tried but that’s sport. Sometimes you lose, but you have to stay in there and try until the last point.”
The Italian, who stands at just 1.64m and weighs in at a slender 60kg, had no response to Williams, who employed all of her 1.75m and 70kg to swat her opponent.
Not that Errani, the world’s top doubles player, has given up hope of ever defeating the world number one.
“If she has a bad day, I can beat her,” she said.
