Uber Chopper takes to the skies of Hong Kong, with rides for HK$1,800 a pop
Car-hailing app firm Uber has brought its helicopter rental service to Hong Kong, with customers in the city being offered aerial tours for HK$1,800 per person.
The company previously offered the helicopter service to customers in mainland China, where it is engaged in a fierce rivalry with domestic taxi-and-car-hailing app giant Didi Kuaidi.
In Shanghai and Hangzhou, customers could book a 30 minute flight for 2,999 yuan (HK$3,800), with an Uber car taking them to and from the helicopter pad.
Uber launched its first helicopter service last July when it partnered with Blade, an app providing helicopter rides from New York city to the Hamptons and Montauk.
The service has since expanded to Los Angeles, Melbourne in Australia, and Cape Town in South Africa.
From 12-5pm on August 8, Hong Kong customers can book a 15 minute helicopter ride through the Uber app, the HK$1,800 fee will be automatically charged to their credit card.
For the promotion, Uber has partnered with luxury Japanese auto maker Infiniti, which will provide the cars that transport customers to and from the helipad. Uber has a long history of working with major car brands, such as Tesla, which recently announced that Hong Kong has the highest density of chargers for its electric sports cars in the world.
The helicopters are provided through a partnership with local firm Heliservices, which offers charters and aerial tours in Hong Kong and Macau.
The announcement comes at an appropriate time for Hong Kong, the city was recently gripped by the story of one local romeo who paid HK$400,000 for a helicopter-fuelled marriage proposal.
