More than two months after extending a deadline for all 12 World Cup stadiums to be ready, Fifa is today set to reveal if Curitiba will be retained as a venue for the June event in Brazil.

England’s security team is “very, very concerned” about the unrest in Brazil ahead of the World Cup, coach Roy Hodgson said.

The Confederations Cup, which serves as a warm-up event for the World Cup, was targeted in June by protesters upset with Brazil’s poor public services, high taxes and lavish spending on the football tournament and 2016 Rio Olympics.

The United States’ soccer squad on Tuesday night secured its seventh straight World Cup appearance with second-half goals from Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan in a 2-0 home win over Mexico.

“People want to come to Columbus and see US-Mexico. It’s almost like the mecca really for us,” goalkeeper Tim Howard said. “You almost feel like it’s our destiny to win here.”

Portugal revived their World Cup qualifying campaign by beating Russia 1-0, while Mario Balotelli was red-carded for Italy in a 0-0 draw at the Czech Republic that put the four-time world champions closer to next year's finals.

Free World Cup broadcasts good news for soccer fans

For the first time in 16 years, Hong Kong's soccer fans will be able to see the important games of the World Cup tournament free of charge. TVB's winning of the broadcasting rights and its decision to show 22 of the 64 games, the opener, both semi-finals and final among them, on its free-to-air channels, is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. Avid soccer fans would like to see each and every goal without having to pay, as they did in 1998. But the broadcaster claims it is financially constrained. Although not the perfect outcome, it is at least an improvement.
