China Mobile's earnings fall 5.9pc, ending 14-year run of profit growth

China Mobile said net profit fell 5.9 per cent to 121.7 billion yuan (HK$153.6 billion) last year due to heavier investments in infrastructure resources. It was the first time in 14 years that profits at the world's largest mobile company by subscribers failed to grow.

Profits at the mainland's three leading telecommunications network operators are expected to be squeezed in the first couple of years of their expansion into 4G mobile services, analysts say.

CSL said the expansion was made possible by more than HK$1 billion it had invested on network development and innovation since last year. It now provides 20 megahertz of 4G spectrum in the 2.6-gigahertz frequency band, up from 15MHz previously.

China’s Huawei, the No 3 smartphone maker behind giants Samsung and Apple, unveiled on Sunday a new mobile, the Ascend P2, which it claims is the fastest in the world.

Sharp-cornered and thinner than a pencil at 8.4mm, the company said it can achieve speeds of 150Mbps, fast enough to download a two-hour high-definition movie in less than five minutes.

The operator of PCCW says the iPhone 5 cannot connect to its fourth-generation wireless network, but can connect to those of its rivals in the city. Users are restricted to PCCW's slower 3G network.
