Lawmakers have called for better education in bicycle safety as accidents on cycle tracks and prosecutions against cyclist offenders have doubled in the past five years.

Survivors of a huge explosion at a rural hotpot restaurant that killed 14 people told yesterday how diners leapt two storeys to the ground to escape the blast.

The powerful blast blew out car windows and bent the iron gate of a shop across the street when it ripped through the Happy Sheep Hot Pot Restaurant in rural Shouyang county, Shanxi province, shortly before 8pm on Friday.

2 women die, hit by cars in Yuen Long and Central

A pedestrian was killed and two women injured when a motorist apparently stepped on the wrong pedal and rammed them with his car in Yuen Long yesterday.

And an 86-year-old woman died after being hit by a taxi in Connaught Road, Central, at around 4am.

Number of fatal accidents down 10pc

The number of fatal road accidents dipped 10 per cent to 114 in the first 10 months of the year compared to the same period last year, police said. There were 11,963 accidents up to October, with 15,330 people injured, a 6.4 per cent drop.

Bus driver's sentence over fatal crash halved

A bus driver responsible for a horrific accident on December 14 that left two people dead and more than a dozen injured won a bid yesterday to reduce his prison sentence. Court of First Instance judge Mrs Justice Verina Bokhary halved a 16-month jail term handed to Tam Kwok-choi, 30, after ruling that the sentencing magistrate imposed too stiff a punishment.

Driver arrested after fatal accident

Police arrested a 30-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death after his truck hit and killed a 66-year-old woman in Ma On Shan yesterday. The woman was using a pedestrian crossing at Fu Po Road outside the bus terminal at Lee On Estate when the accident happened at 10.30am. She was declared dead soon after.
