Muriqui determined to put icing on cake for Guangzhou

Chinese football has been waiting impatiently for a team capable of being crowned kings of Asian football and Brazilian striker Muriqui believes Guangzhou Evergrande can end the nation’s two-decade absence from the summit.

Guangzhou Evergrande confirmed their place in the draw for the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League, but reaching the last eight for the second season in a row will not be enough to satisfy World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi.

Beijing Guoan's prospects of qualifying for the last eight of the AFC Champions League will rest squarely on the club's trip to South Korea next week after the Chinese Super League side were held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man FC Seoul at the Workers' Stadium last night.

Sunray Cave Sun Hei may collect all three points without kicking a ball as their AFC Cup group F opponents, Persibo of Indonesia, were nowhere to be seen in Hong Kong last night.

The Indonesians were supposed to arrive on Sunday for tonight's tie at Mong Kok Stadium in accordance with normal practice.
