China’s Ai Weiwei pays tribute to Pablo Neruda in Chile painting

A massive painting by Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei dedicated to Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda was unveiled on Saturday in Valparaiso, the Chilean port where the poet lived.

Ai Weiwei is a big, brawny hulk of an artist who has given his weight as 280 pounds (127kg). He has a tiger's back and a bear's waist, with a bearded face that shows he's from the north. His good-natured smile hides a certain scorn. He is not loquacious but when he speaks, his words are sharp and to the point. He has a vast knowledge of political reality in the mainland.

Ai Weiwei out on bail, 'admits tax evasion'

Artist-activist Ai Weiwei was released on bail last night, with police saying it was because he had confessed to tax evasion and was suffering from chronic illness.

The decision was also made 'in consideration of the fact that Ai has repeatedly said he is willing to pay the taxes he evaded', Xinhua quoted police in Beijing as saying.

My tour de force
