Seoul jets shadow HK-bound jumbo

TWO South Korean fighter aircraft intercepted and shadowed an Air Canada jumbo en route to Hong Kong from Vancouver in December after the jet strayed into Korean airspace without permission, the airline said yesterday.

CANADIAN Airlines is offering a special economy class fare from Hong Kong to Canada for travel commencing before December 9, valid on weekdays only. HK-Vancouver is HK$4,525 one-way and $8,040 return.

There are also specials to Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.

Price war ruled out in fresh Canada challenge

AIR Canada will begin regular services between Hong Kong, Vancouver and Toronto on December 22 and expects to reach break-even within six months, its regional director Robert Pinkerton said.

A spokesman for Canada's largest carrier ruled out a price-cutting war with CathayPacific and Canadian Airlines, which have dominated the route for 50 years.

Flight scare

ABOUT 75 passengers and 15 flight crew were evacuated from their Canadian Airlines 747 at Kai Tak yesterday when a fire warning light flashed on in the cockpit during a flight from Bangkok. A wiring test revealed the indicator light for the No 2 hold was faulty. The light was replaced and the plane took off for Vancouver last night.
