Voting was scheduled to end last night for 23,000 engineers and technical workers considering whether to authorise a walkout in their dispute over retirement benefits. Approval would allow the Seattle-based union to call a strike at any time.

French shops and office buildings will have to turn off their lights at night to save energy and reduce light pollution, the French environment ministry said. From July 1, all non-residential buildings will have to switch off interior lights one hour after the last worker leaves the premises.

An Israeli air strike killed the commander of the military wing of Gaza's Hamas rulers yesterday, prompting a furious response from militants who said it had opened "the gates of hell". The attack marked the biggest escalation between Israel and Gaza militants since a 2008-2009 conflict.
