The Nimitz Strike Group includes 64 aircraft as well as cruisers and destroyers, said the group's commander, Rear Admiral Mike White, after the aircraft carrier anchored off the southern port of Busan.

China should focus on hi-tech weapons, not plodding old carriers

Technology has a clever habit of outdoing fantasy, and this month the US Navy announced that it has finally produced a working Laser Weapon System (the US military has been trying to develop something like this for decades). After proving itself by shooting down target drones in 12 out of 12 tests, the laser will be on board an active US warship by next year, probably in the Persian Gulf, ready to zap Iranian missiles.

A senior naval officer says China will have more aircraft carriers and they will probably be bigger and more powerful than its first carrier, the Liaoning, which was commissioned in September.

The People's Liberation Army Daily has revealed what China's first carrier, the Liaoning, looks like on the inside. Western naval and shipbuilding experts say the hull's design is totally different from that of the ship from which it was adapted, the Soviet Kuznetsov-class carrier Varyag.

China's first aircraft carrier may be named the "Liaoning", after the province where it was completed, according to mainland media.

Dalian, a port city in northeastern Liaoning province, has been home to the ship for more than a decade, since the uncompleted Soviet carrier formerly known as the Varyag arrived from Ukraine in March 2002.

Late admiral praised for navy's advances

The People's Liberation Army Daily paid tribute yesterday to the late Admiral Liu Huaqing, praising him for his contributions to the navy's modernisation, especially the aircraft carrier programme.

As the former chief commander of the navy, Liu was a strong advocate of the carrier programme.
