Airport quizzed on green report

The government wants the Airport Authority to give it more information on how the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport will affect the ecology.

The authority handed in a report on May 29 which showed how big the project would be and how it might affect the environment. But some green groups say important information is missing and some are out of date.

Third runway exactly what the people want... and pigs fly

Secretary for Transport and Housing Eva Cheng said there was overwhelming public support for building a HK$136.2 billion third runway at the airport on Lantau, with 73 per cent of nearly 24,000 respondents backing the idea in a government-commissioned survey. Nearly four-fifths of them called for a fast decision, and Cheng agreed.

Jardine sets fast career ramp

It takes 700-800 ground crew of Jardine Air Terminal Services (JATS) working around the clock to ensure that aircraft of their 50-plus passenger and cargo airline clients can turn around in one hour - or an hour and a half at most - at the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap kok.

Cause of jet's bungled takeoff still a mystery

It's still not clear why a Finnair flight almost took off from a taxiway instead of a runway at the city's airport.

An inquiry found that the plane, carrying 272 people, had no problems with light signals or radio communication and the weather was fine.

Airport risks stalling as regional rivals soar

Air transport has become increasingly important to Hong Kong's economy, given that the city is now an international aviation hub. Since the global economic recovery, we have witnessed a huge jump in exports and re-exports, and a healthy rebound in air cargo volumes and air traffic movement this year.

Airport runway safety measures worth the effort

Aviation safety depends not only on the experience and competence of pilots, but also the quality of support and facilities on the ground. Pilot error seems to have been the main cause of a worrying incident in September, in which a Hong Kong Airlines jet carrying 122 passengers and seven crew attempted to take off from a taxiway rather than a runway at Chek Lap Kok.
