The inconvenient truth

While couples opting for home births may be spared gratuitous medical intervention, securing a birth certificate for their baby can be troublesome.

The Immigration Department requires newborns to obtain a birth certificate within 42 days. Hospitals will send details of babies born in their care to the department for processing as a matter of course.

This week's question Which political leader do you admire the most?

Astha Agarwal, 14

Al Gore. I really admire what he's doing for the world. Global warming is a big problem for our planet and I think he has increased understanding and used his status to gain publicity for a very important cause. He is very determined and backs up his arguments with evidence. I really respect him for that.

Warming to Al Gore

There is an assumption that the leader of the world's most powerful nation, the United States, is the most important person on the planet. For now this is certainly the case but, come this evening, when the foremost international award - the Nobel Peace Prize - is announced, it could quickly shift.

Capitalism is an inevitable byproduct of democracy

'Democracy begins with the premise that all are created equal. Capitalism begins with the premise that competition will inevitably produce inequality, depending on differences in talent, industriousness and fortune. The two value systems have been the reigning philosophies in two different spheres of life.'

Uniforms provide sense of belonging

I believe that school uniforms are a good idea.

This is mostly because I am lazy. I don't like to waste time choosing clothes before I go to school.

I also think school uniforms give students a sense of belonging. They help us feel connected to our school and our peers.
