With fresh momentum from the capture of a strategic town in western Syria, President Bashar al-Assad's forces have turned their sights to driving rebel fighters from the country's densely populated heartland, including the cities of Homs and Aleppo.

Syrian troops backed by tanks and warplanes on Wednesday fought to repel an attack on the central prison in Aleppo after rebels blew up its walls in suicide car bombings, a watchdog said.

No news on kidnapped Syria bishops

Aleppo’s Greek Orthodox archdiocese said on Wednesday it had no news on two Orthodox bishops kidnapped in Syria, a day after a Christian association said the two men had been released.

Fierce fighting between Syrian rebels and regime forces has sparked an exodus of residents from the Sheikh Maqsud district of the northern city of Aleppo, a watchdog group says. Violence also engulfed areas in and around Damascus on Sunday, where children were among eight civilians killed in shelling of Kafar Batna village, while a missile slammed into a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, causing more casualties.

Syrian rebels have shot down a fighter jet in the northern province of Aleppo, a monitoring group and an army defector said.

"The rebels shot down the fighter jet in the west of Aleppo province, where fierce battles are taking place," said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

"The jet was bombarding the village of Khan al-Asal."

Three car bombs tore into the heart of Syria's second city Aleppo, killing almost 50 people, as the regime launched an offensive against rebels near Damascus, a watchdog said.

Rebel fighters killed at least 15 soldiers yesterday when they attacked military posts in the northwest of the country, triggering fierce clashes, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Fighting raged in a strategic district of Syria’s commercial capital Aleppo on Saturday, the third day of an all-out rebel offensive to seize the city, monitors said.

The focal point of combat was Salaheddin, a rebel stronghold on the southwest side of the city where insurgents attacked an army position, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
