Leading Italian kitchenware company Alessi, in its first collaboration with the Beijing Industrial Design Centre, has engaged eight mainland architects to reinterpret one of the most mundane and humble products: the tray.

Enter the dragon

1 Get a jump on the Year of the Dragon with Christofle's silver sculpture (HK$7,850). The intricately detailed piece designed by Thierry Lebon sits on a black exotic wood base, and symbolises luck and strength of character.

Spread joy with home comforts

1 The Black Tie Bliss Decanter (HK$1,180) from Riedel adds a touch of the romantic to the usual classic shape with its heart design and black-glass ribbon. Made of lead crystal, each piece is mouth-blown and formed without the use of moulds, making each one unique. Available at Town House in Prince's Building.

Where? SimpleKonseptStore is on Jalan Lesmana, Bali's boutique-filled strip, near Seminyak Beach and the Ku De Ta restaurant.

Who? Ex-Prada designer Paola Zancanaro, founder of women's wear line Coquette and fellow Italian Mario Gierotto, designer of menswear line Nakal, launched the boutique in August.

Nicol Boyd

Who is he? A product designer from Britain who came to Hong Kong last year to establish the Office for Product Design with a friend from college. A graduate of the prestigious Glasgow School of Art, Boyd landed his first job at Alessi, where he worked with some of the biggest names in Italian design.
