Softer track proves a blessing for Wong

The persistent showers may have cost trainer Alex Wong Yu-on a couple more wins, but the softer track proved to be a blessing in disguise when his aptly named galloper won the Dongguan Handicap (1,400m). Blessing ($14) came with a well-timed finish to nail North Hill by a 1/2-length, with a neck away to the well-supported Ribot Legend in third.

'He is not much of a horse'

Trainer Alex Wong Yu-on was not overplaying the win of Clovis in the Waterfall Bay Handicap and simply stated the horse was in the right place at the right time to finally land his second win from 38 starts. Clovis was well rated by apprentice Kevin Leung Ka-wai and, despite tiring nearing the post, was able to scramble home to beat fast-finishing Romancing Tamar by a neck.

A hot-streak treble for Howard Cheng Yue-tin was the perfect way for him to surge to his most successful season with a career-high tally of 43 winners.

Three straight wins aboard Cosmo Successor, Grandway Flyer and Touch Chic boosted Cheng to new heights and thrust him into equal fourth position on the jockeys' table.

Wong praises 'perfect' Cheng

Trainer Alex Wong Yu-on was full of New Year goodwill after his troubled galloper Blessing landed a narrow win over favourite National Treasure in the final event. Wong said he was not surprised to see his lightly raced five-year-old burst through along the rails, but credited a 'perfect ride' from Howard Cheng Yue-tin for the victory.
