Goodbye consulates, and please just keep on going

Companies are no longer defined by national borders.

Consulates forced to move out of Central

SCMP headline, October 31

Back many centuries ago national governments (or what passed for them) had a problem when they wanted to talk to each other - no phone, no fax, no Web, no e-mail, no SMS, no satellites, no cable, no post office, no nothing.

Giving the gift

Operation Santa Claus is a great example of how a grass-roots effort to help the city's disadvantaged grew to become an important territory-wide event that involves big corporate donors, schools and the public.

Some schools even volunteer to organise fund-raising activities. Student ambassadors from the city's universities play an active role in the event.

We have a duty to confront people who spoil the environment

On a recent Sunday excursion with friends to Sai Kung, we were astounded when the small-ferry operator threw his empty polystyrene rice box into the sea.

Compounding our astonishment was the fact that he had to walk past a rubbish bin to do so and that he did it in our full view.

Recognition of creative talent

I have read many stories in Young Post about the Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme. All of the students have performed very well in the arts, for example, music, drama, dance or photography.

Besides their creative talent, the youngsters have a good attitude. They inspire others by sharing their experiences with them.

English days fun, students recall

English days are nothing new in Hong Kong, but some are definitely more fun than others. At Pooi To Middle School, plans are already in motion to make its English days next month a time to remember.

A special English Activities Committee has been set up to organise the events, and students can expect a fun visit from KELY Circus to help improve their English.

English made easy

Our school's English-speaking day was a real success.

Teachers and students worked very hard to organise events that were fun and interesting.

Most students were not used to speaking English - some were reluctant to do so for fear of making a mistake. So we gave our junior students some tasks that would get them talking in English.

Our Ambassadors of Smell

IN difficult economic and political times in Hong Kong there is always one section of the community which can be relied upon to have a Lunar New Year break at your expense . . . all in the name of civic duty, of course.
