Boat anchor cut cable, mainland says

Updated at 3.03pm: China's telecommunications department said a fishing boat accidentally severed the undersea Internet cable fixed this week after a 10-day break.

Mainland investigators found that a fishing boat's heavy iron anchor had cut the cable, according to a report from Hefei-based Jianghuai Morning Post.

Sorry about oil trace incident

I refer to the letter from Simon McCrum headlined, 'Disgraceful' (South China Morning Post, September 22). We have spoken to the coxswain of the boat and would like to explain what happened on September 17.

Standard Boat Service Co Ltd is the owner of the boat numbered 32106. On that day, there were about four boats at the bay on the west side of Lamma when we stopped.

Marine police launch inquiry after vessel is sunk by buoy

MARINE police were yesterday investigating the sinking of a $2.5 million high-speed police launch off the north of Lantau.

The Sea Spray catamaran, PL29, hit an unlit buoy south of The Brothers at about 9 pm on Friday. It sank despite furious attempts by other police launches to pump the water out.

A senior officer said the vessel took three hours to sink.

Sea tragedy

A LOCAL engineer died from head injuries at the United Christian Hospital after he lost his balance and fell into a hold of a Singaporean vessel anchored off Junk Bay last night. Chan Chiu-wah, 56, boarded the vessel, Universe Admiral, to repair a motor, but lost his balance and fell into a hold at about 6.30 pm.

Ships collision

ONE of the largest ships currently in port, the 42,000-tonne Stove Tradition, hit a smaller vessel in the Western Anchorage yesterday after dragging its anchor. Crew alerted the Marine Department at 2 pm after they had ''lightly touched'' the 5,010-tonne Tsang Jia.
