Modern-day gladiators battle to revive spectacle of ancient Rome

Actors Russell Crowe and Joachin Phoenix might not be the guests of Italy 2003, but some gladiators are. A dozen of them have arrived in Hong Kong, disembarking from the plane wearing togas and baffling immigration officers who might not have expected them.

Gladiator: British director Ridley Scott has hit box-office gold once again with his fabulous Roman epic. Although being out-grossed by some of the big earners over the US Memorial Day weekend - including blockbusters Mission: Impossible 2, Dinosaur and Shanghai Noon - the film still dragged in ticket sales estimated at US$17.3 million (HK$134.8 million).

Fight night

We are going to hear much about Roman gladiators in the coming months when Ridley Scott's latest epic hits our cinemas. But tonight's Gladiator (Pearl, 9.35pm) of the same name has nothing to do with it.

This, in contrast, is about the type of depraved gladiatorial battles that go on across the modern world, at street level and in sordid, sweaty sports rings.
