Cleaning and postal work panned

Legco's public accounts watchdog has backed two separate auditor's reports criticising the management of street cleaning services and overtime payments to Post Office staff.

A 370-page Public Accounts Committee report looked at six areas of concern raised by the Audit Commission in previous reports, after conducting public hearings.

Christian lawyers add weight to gambling row

A group of Christian lawyers has called on the Government to take public morality into account when deciding whether to legalise soccer gambling.

In a submission to the Government, the Lawyers Christian Fellowship social concern group said: 'The laws of any society incorporate the general moral sense of the community if they are to be respected and enforced.'

Billing plan threatens 261 jobs

Up to 261 staff at the Water Supplies Department will lose their jobs if lawmakers back a plan to computerise its customer care and billing system.

But the Works Bureau pledged in a paper to lawmakers that there would be no forced sackings. A team of 21 staff would be needed to run the new system.
