Annie Au reaches final of Cleveland Classic

Annie Au Wing-chi continued her promising start to 2014 after reaching the final of the Tub O’Towels Cleveland Classic in the United States.

A qualifier in the Women’s Squash Association Gold 50 tournament featuring the world’s best players, Au made all the way through after upsetting three top English players. She takes on world number one Nicol David of Malaysia in the final.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, Annie Au Wing-chi became the first home player to reach the semi-finals of the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open. Yesterday, she crashed out in the opening round.

Au suffered one of her worst results in recent times when she lost to Indian qualifier Joshana Chinappa in five games at the Hong Kong Squash Centre.

Annie Au Wing-chi has become the first player from Hong Kong to break into the world's top 10 after the latest rankings were released yesterday. She moved up from the 11th place to 10th following her victory over Donna Urquhart of Australia in the final of the Buler Challenge Cup last month.

Au prefers to play down talk of winning title

Two years ago, once the final ball had been hit, Annie Au Wing-chi wasn't sure what to think.

'Oh, she won,' Au said of her Hong Kong teammate. But then a moment later, Au realised Chiu Ka-kei's victory meant Hong Kong had won the team event at the World Junior Women's Championship.
