A discrepancy over when a hydrant system stopped functioning raised further questions over why it took so long to extinguish a blaze last week in Ap Lei Chau.

Firefighters deployed to a blaze on the 17th storey of an Ap Lei Chau residential block on Thursday raised a ladder from a fire engine only 45 minutes after the alarm was sounded, the Fire Services Department admitted yesterday.

Five people were injured when a fire broke out at South Horizons housing estate in Ap Lei Chau early on Thursday and more than 100 residents were roused from sleep and evacuated. Water had to be pumped all the way up from the ground to Flat B on the 17th floor, where an air conditioner was believed to have caught fire.

HK$20m lawsuit over blaze at shipyard

An Ap Lei Chau shipyard operator is suing a developer for more than HK$20 million after a fire damaged its docks and a historic yacht.

In a High Court writ, Harvest Marine Services Company sued Cheerjoy Development, the developer of the Larvotto luxury residential project, for negligence which the shipyard operator said contributed to a blaze on March 12 last year.

Boss facing eviction says shipyards being killed off

The boss of a shipyard says the government is killing the marine industry, after it was ordered to leave its premises with just two days' notice.

Thomson Lee, managing director of Harbour Jet Shipping in Ap Lei Chau, says Lands Department and police officers came to the premises he has sub-leased for 10 years and said he must clear the site by today.
