Applause to revel in fast pace

Paul O'Sullivan has had some surprises in his life as a trainer and British private purchase Imperial Applause has been responsible for at least one of them. But the smart galloper is ready to win again after three runs from a spell and should return to a much more positive welcome if he can win his third race at Sha Tin this afternoon.

One election debate, two rules for clapping

If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands - unless you're an official supporter of Donald Tsang Yam-kuen or Alan Leong Kah-kit, in which case you must sit at the back and, whatever you do, don't applaud or ask a question.

How to avoid the clap trap

The Hong Kong Philharmonic has decided to spare the hoi polloi the anxiety and embarrassment of not knowing when to applaud during a concert.

Let down by venue and moody jazz diva

Nowhere else in the world does one have to pay $950 for the pleasure of sitting on a very uncomfortable chair to listen to a jazz concert.

Diana Krall came to town for one night on Monday.

Cheers as the Whites come top

There was a chorus of cheers as the annual sports day organised by Chong Gene Hang College got off to a roaring start at the command: 'On your marks, get set, go!'

Unenlightened applause marred charity concert

I recently attended the Hong Kong Medical Association's annual charity concert at the Cultural Centre. I was very impressed by the performance of the volunteer orchestra, made up, according to the programme, of doctors, nurses, allied health workers, their families and musical friends.

Musical etiquette

I am often annoyed at the way Hong Kong concert-goers applaud at every break in classical concerts.

I can even remember one occasion, when the audience broke into applause in the middle of an aria. Most people seem to be unaware that the international convention is that one should only applaud at the end of a work and not in between movements.

Rapturous applause greets budding young performers

The curtain fell on the musical Dreams of Three Young People to rapturous applause from the audience at Mu Kuang English School.

The marvellous show was presented by the F 1 Fun Learning Scheme Committee which consists of enthusiastic sixth formers who look after their younger Form One schoolmates.

My husband and I have enjoyed several classical concerts during our two-year stay in Hong Kong. We can get to concert halls more easily than in Tokyo where we had to spend almost the whole day just to enjoy a two-hour concert.

Unlucky duo are worth following

Don't give up on either Glory Of Pakistan or Applause For Me, both of whom were severely checked and blocked in last night's fifth event at Happy Valley.

Crown Commander won by two lengths, but the story might well have been different if either Glory Of Pakistan or Applause For Me had found racing room from the top of the straight.

Applause For Me ready for mile

Look no further than the David Oughton-trained Applause For Me as banker material in the opening leg of the Triple Trio at tomorrow's important Chairman's Prize fixture.

Applause For Me has been crying out for a move to a mile in order to show his full potential but has been unlucky on both his previous two outings over shorter trips.

Oughton's patience to be applauded

English handler David Oughton is renowned for his patience - an attribute instilled from his days as a dual-purpose mentor in England where the jump horses he trained would often not come into their own until their five-year-old days or beyond.

21 Mar 1996 - 12:00am

Allan warms to Applause

HORSE trainers are only human and like all humans they have set behavioural patterns.

Former champion trainer Ivan Allan is a classic case. Since their inception he has farmed the events reserved for local riders and a level stakes support of his runners in these races would have yielded a substantial profit. Team Valour at 56-1 is a case in point.

Plenty to cheer about for Fownes

LAWRIE Fownes burst back to form in no uncertain terms with a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday and could well strike again with Plenty Cash in this afternoon's seventh event at Happy Valley.
