Cynthia Breit's Indonesian style and husband Oliver's German functionality have combined to create a stunning home in Discovery Bay. The Breits' low-rise apartment at first feels like a chic and serene Asian spa, with warming woods, calming stone, pots of plants and statues of Buddha. But a closer inspection reveals clever, utilitarian details.

Avant-garde lampshades

Designers are giving lampshades an avant-garde makeover. With versions made of pierced disposable plastic spoons and polka-dot and punched polypropylene - there's even one that knits itself before you go to sleep - it seems as if there's no end to ideas when it comes to transforming the lampshade into a highly decorative conversation piece.

Chic frills

The economy might still be in the doldrums, but that's no reason to lose your design cred and start using milk crates for furniture or scouring landfill sites.

Although a lot of designer furniture and homeware is prohibitively expensive, you can still pick up beautifully designed objects at prices that won't require a second mortgage.

Michele De Lucchi

He looks like a cross between legendary 20th-century Russian monk Rasputin and Fidel Castro. Who is he? He is a Milanese design ideologue famous for his leading role in Memphis. Formed in 1981, Memphis was an alliance of Italian designers and architects responsible for a string of memorable products in the 1980s.
