A 17-year-old student who twice indecently touched an insurance saleswoman's legs was placed on 18 months' probation in Kwun Tong Court yesterday.

Slow progress towards a sex offenders' registry

Efforts to press the government to set up a registry of sex offenders over the past few years made little progress as proponents and opponents became locked in rounds of debates.

A consultation on a possible registry was launched in July by the Law Reform Commission, the latest effort to fast-track interim measures to protect children from repeat child molesters.

Journalist denies assaulting colleague

A journalist pleaded not guilty in Eastern Court yesterday to a charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. Lim Siong Hoon, 52, an editor of the Hong Kong Economic Times, is accused of attacking colleague Ho Hon-yue at the newspaper's office in North Point on June 5. Principal Magistrate Garry Tallentire adjourned the hearing to September 26.

Schizophrenic's assault claim dismissed

A schizophrenic who said his illness was brought on by a series of alleged police assaults has failed in his bid to sue the force for HK$7.7 million. Wu Shu-bun, through his mother, had claimed in the Court of First Instance that he was assaulted by police on three occasions. However, Mr Justice Jeremy Poon Shiu-chor found there was no proof the alleged assaults ever took place.

Pet shop owner's sentence upheld

A pet shop owner jailed for seven years for inflicting horrific wounds on an employee had her sentence upheld by the Court of Appeal. Chan Pui-mun, 32, was jailed in 2004 after being found guilty in the District Court of 14 charges, including assault occasioning bodily harm, wounding and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Tutor pleads guilty to assaulting boy

A private tutor who pinched and punched a primary school pupil has pleaded guilty to assault and has been remanded in custody for two weeks until sentencing on March 26. Tong Chi-keung, 28, who taught at a North Point tutorial centre, was yesterday charged at Eastern Court with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Sex offender turned tutor admits molesting five girls during lessons

A repeat sex offender who became a tutorial school owner pleaded guilty yesterday to indecently assaulting five girls while massaging them during lessons.

Tam Tung-chun, 49, committed the sexual assaults when he offered tutorials to the five students aged 12 to 15 at his Tin Shui Wai flat, which he had rented since 2003 to give lessons to children from Primary One.

Helper in custody over alleged assaults

An Indonesian domestic helper accused of letting a five-year-old girl in her care be molested by a part-time member of staff at an indoor amusement park in return for money was remanded in custody yesterday by Kowloon City magistrate Ernest Lin Kam-hung. The offences are alleged to have occurred at the Namco Wonder Park in Whampoa.

Ice-fuelled father jailed for assaults

A father of two young girls was jailed for 14 months yesterday after he admitted assaulting his wife, mother-in-law, a rubbish collector and two policemen while under the influence of the drug Ice in March. Police had to use pepper spray to subdue Romar Tubolto, 21, on March 6, the District Court had heard.
