3 officers charged over raid at Whitehead

THREE Correctional Services Department (CSD) officers were yesterday charged with assaulting four Vietnamese boat people in the controversial raid on the Whitehead detention centre in April.

Police charged

TWO sergeants accused of assaulting a recruit at the Police Training School appeared in Western Court yesterday. Yau Man-tai, 31, and Ching Kwok-wa, 32, both denied a joint charge of common assault. Ching denied three other counts of common assault. Trial was set for January 19.

Recruit abuse counts

TWO police sergeants were charged yesterday with assault following a criminal investigation into the alleged punching last month of a recruit constable at the Police Training School.

Both officers, an instructor and a trainer, have been suspended from duty.

Sex case adjournment

A HONG KONG businessman appeared in the High Court yesterday on two sex charges.

Hon Leung-fong, 33, is accused of gross indecency on a child under 16 and indecent assault between 1987 and last year.

Mr Justice Leonard adjourned the case to a date to be fixed.

A 27-YEAR-OLD man arrested early yesterday, was last night charged with two counts of indecent assault, two counts of impersonating a police officer, one count of theft and one count of resisting arrest. He will appear in Eastern Court today.

Police on bribe count back before magistrate

THE District Court will try two senior anti-triad police for allegedly accepting a $20,000 bribe from triad boss Andely Chan Yiu-hing.

Peter Pannu, 30, and David Khosa, 31, re-appeared in Eastern Court yesterday, charged with accepting an advantage from Chan on January 7 last year.

Warders cleared of assault counts

FOUR correctional services officers were acquitted of charges laid following the death of an inmate, after a key witness turned out to be partially blind and suffering from delusions.

The charges had stemmed from the death of inmate Sin Kong-meng, 20, who died in the Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre's sick bay on August 13, 1991.

Prison term for assault

A PRINTING worker who indecently assaulted a woman on a train had his $3,000 fine changed to a 28-day prison term by the Court of Appeal yesterday.

The court decided that the sentence against Ng Sai-man, 23, was too lenient. The 26-year-old victim said she had felt a finger touching her genitals as she travelled on a train to Kowloon Tong.

Guilty plea over attack

A TEENAGE prisoner escaped from a training centre after he and two other inmates attacked a prison officer, Eastern Court heard yesterday.

Tang Kai-wing and Tsang Chun-shan, both 16, and Gurpal Singh, 18, admitted having punched prison officer Man Yuet-ming from behind at the special unit ward of Cape Collinson Training Centre in Chai Wan on October 15.
