Atlanta's Matt Ryan threw four touchdown passes and the Falcons clinched a first-round NFL play-off bye with a 31-18 victory over the Detroit Lions.

Detroit's Calvin Johnson broke the NFL record for most receiving yards in a season in a losing cause with one game to play, earning a standing ovation from home supporters who saw the Lions, 4-11, suffer their seventh defeat in a row.

NFL's New Orleans Saints beat Atlanta Falcons 31-27

The New Orleans Saints handed the high-flying Atlanta Falcons their first defeat of the NFL season, the Saints defence holding firm in the waning minutes of a 31-27 triumph.

The Saints stopped Atlanta twice in the closing minutes to stun their National Conference South division rivals.

The New York Giants crushed the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in an ominous sign of their intentions to defend their Super Bowl title.

The Giants (4-2) made light work of the 49ers (4-2), the team that beat last year’s NFC Conference final, to win 26-3, while last season’s AFC champions, the New England Patriots, suffered a surprise loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Atlanta remained undefeated, Tom Brady won the battle of the marquee quarterbacks and Drew Brees had a record-setting day in week five of the National Football League season.

Michael Turner rushed for the go-ahead touchdown with just under three minutes remaining as the Atlanta Falcons ground out a 24-17 win over the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field.
