It was quite the TV experience last Sunday night and early Monday morning. I'm talking about the World Cup finals broadcast obviously, but it's more than the game itself that was shocking. Far more. It was bizarre, obscene and surreal. No, not French skipper Zinedine Zidane's headbutt. I'm talking about the local stations' broadcasts before the big match.

Old news

Scrabbling about in the back of the SCMP official television filing cabinet this week, I came upon a piece of Hong Kong history that moved me so much I feel bound to share it with you.

In fact, I give fair warning that I will probably be milking this archive a lot during the next few days, especially when the racing is on and there is nothing contemporary worth commenting on.

Action stations as TV hosts gear up

THE big question about English-language television coverage of the World Cup can be answered straight away: no, the local commentators will not be wearing jackets that make them look like ice-cream men again. TVB and ATV have finally listened to reason - the blue and lime that blinded us in 1994, have gone for good.

Your cartoon on the Comment page on March 30, was so apt concerning ATV and the Hong Kong Sevens.

ONCE again, the territory's two television stations are trapped in another Judge Pao ratings battle.

TVB has just started showing its own Judge Pao series, soon to be followed by ATV's.

Once again, local audiences will be left without much choice; they will be treated to similar entertainment on both stations during their weekday evenings.

High ratings cannot hide shallow content

LOCAL television stations should not be solely concerned with ratings. They should also pay attention to the quality of the programmes they broadcast.

I thought about this problem with quality when I watched the popular ATV Home prime-time programme, Hong Kong Today, which airs between 8.25pm and 9pm, from Monday to Friday.

ATV programme transmission jammed to China

CHINA last night jammed transmission into the mainland of a controversial ATV documentary about the Tiananmen Square massacre. Instead, Guangdong viewers who normally receive Hong Kong TV, saw a concert by the pop star Sally Yeh. ATV Home viewers said an episode of the Justice Pao series was shown and then the graphics for the ATV documentary series News Magazine came up.
