Auckland has become a hot spot for mainland investors. Photo: Thinkstock

Reports of Chinese buyers snapping up large numbers of Auckland properties have been greatly exaggerated, according to a leading economist. Auckland is clearly the target for Chinese buyers. Recent sales data shows that 19 per cent of overseas buyers of property in the north island's largest city are from China, adding more fuel to an already hot market.

New beginning beckons as home approaches

Helen Leavey takes a last look at New Zealand before returning to her native Britain.

The view from our motel window in New Zealand is gorgeous. Just 30 metres from where I am writing this lies the Bay of Plenty, with small boats gently bobbing on its clear waters. Earlier today, we went kayaking in the bay and were startled by a large flying fish that jumped out of the sea right in front of us.

KIWI delights

Despite being a fairly popular emigration destination for some time, many Hongkongers now only know New Zealand through the spectacularly scenic locations in the Lord of the Rings movies, that sparked an influx of visitors seeking to put themselves in the picture via themed guided tours.

Asian investors focus on New Zealand

Hongkongers like New Zealand. Many choose to educate their children in its perceived pristine environment, while others will holiday, or even relocate, to the country's wide open spaces that are so far removed from their own urban existence.

What's your favourite destination?

I love Vienna. On the corner of every street, some composer or musician has lived there at some point in time. It was amazing, to see where my favourite composer, Mozart, lived, composed and performed.

What one destination has always eluded you?

Where the action is

Rotorua. The name sounds like a machine designed to cut back the weeds of boredom. It means 'second lake' in Maori and it's a quiet town surrounded by stunning geothermal geysers, forests and crystal lakes. After 11 months and 22 countries, I am eager to recharge my travel batteries and New Zealand is just the place to do it.
