Medic in coma after hiking fall

A senior officer with the Auxiliary Medical Service was fighting for her life last night after a hiking accident during a leadership training exercise in Sai Kung.

The 52-year-old victim, identified only by her surname Chow, and five colleagues were observers for five trainee leaders on the trip. Four experienced hiking trainers were also present.

Refurbished ambulances fuel row over outsourcing

The fire department has begun refurbishing ambulances to prepare for the outsourcing of some of its duties to the Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS), ambulance service sources said yesterday.

One source said it was believed the refurbished ambulances would become the fleet for the AMS.

Fire chief defends plan to outsource ambulance duties

A fire chief has defended a plan that allows other medical and health service providers to handle ambulance duties to help reduce the heavy workload of paramedics.

The comment emerged after a Chinese newspaper report said the Fire Services Department Ambulancemen's Union planned to hold a 24-hour hunger strike on Saturday to protest against the outsourcing scheme.

Practice makes perfect for rescues

One of 40 hikers caught in a 'hill fire' is rescued during an exercise in Tai Lam Country Park yesterday.

More than 300 staff from the Auxiliary Medical Service and the St John Ambulance Brigade were involved in the exercise.

I wish to point out that one of the photo captions wrongly reported that the relief services were provided by the Police Medical Team.

Enjoy day of fun at beach hut

HAVE you ever thought of enjoying a day on the beach with friends inside a cosy beach hut? Over at South Bay three bathing sheds will be available for daily hire, starting from tomorrow, on a 10-week trial scheme.

The sheds are built in the shade of trees, have an electricity supply, and are equipped with simple garden furniture and fans.

Backing for health check

THE government-funded Auxiliary Medical Service has stood by its decision to take part in two health check days organised by the pro-China Kwun Tong Residents' Union in the run-up to the Urban Council elections.

Staff officer Luk Wai-hung said it was not the service's practice to consider political affiliations before deciding to participate.

I FIND it necessary to bring to your attention that the first aid coverage for the Road Safety Patrol's 30th anniversary parade on February 27 was provided by the Auxiliary Medical Services (AMS) and not a St John Ambulance team as quoted (Sunday Morning Post, February 28).
