AWT shares up strongly despite $170m in creditor claims

Shares in freight forwarder AWT Holdings rose 9 per cent to 2.4 cents yesterday despite facing claims from its creditors for $170 million.

Uncertainty enveloped the company yesterday when it revealed its overall financial position would depend on the outcome of negotiations with its creditors.

Parking space deal

AWT World Transport is diversifying into property with the purchase of 60 car parking spaces at Whampoa Garden from China Strategic Holdings in a deal worth $47 million.

Under the deal, AWT will issue to China Strategic an unsecured convertible note due in 1998 of which $40 million is convertible into AWT shares at an initial conversion price of 80 cents a share.

AWT chairman resigns

AWT World Transport Holdings chairman Lam King-ko has resigned after the sale of his 69.7 million shares in the company. The shares represent 30.9 per cent of AWT. Mr Lam will remain as managing director.

AWT to buy Shanghai land

AWT World Transport Holdings has entered into an agreement to acquire a property at Hongqiao in Shanghai for US$2.8 million.

AWT said the acquisition would be financed by borrowings and internal resources. A majority of the property will be retained for use by AWT's transport operations with the remainder being rented out.
