B shares jump on fresh rumours of markets merger

Foreign currency-denominated Bshares yesterday jumped in Shanghai and Shenzhen on renewed speculation that the markets soon would be merged with their larger yuan-denominated A-share counterparts.

The Shanghai B-Share Index surged 7.19 per cent to close at 152.676 points while the Shenzhen B-Share Index rose 3.91 per cent to 479.737 points.

Dealers wary of new share offers

Mainland share prices closed lower yesterday on concerns over increased fund-raising activities following the launch of two additional initial public offerings.

Although there had generally only been two IPO launches each week, there have been four this week, dealers said, noting Zhejiang Jinying yesterday announced the launch of a 45 million A-share offer.

The mainland's B shares are expected to continue to struggle next year after a disappointing year.

B shares have fallen 49 per cent this year, with average daily turnover on the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets shrinking to about US$3 million to $4 million, compared with about $10 million a year ago.

Shanghai's B shares dropped to a fresh record low yesterday on a lack of follow-through buying to support an early rebound, analysts said. The B-Share Index lost 0.39 per cent to close at 30.545 points for the seventh consecutive record low finish. Shenzhen's B-Share Index also dropped, losing 1.24 per cent to close the session at 62.96 points.

Jinzhou Harbour Co

Jinzhou Harbour Co plans to raise US$21 million from a B-share listing on the Shanghai exchange this month - the first B-share primary offering in Shanghai this year.

The company will issue 100 million B shares through an international placement, at 21 US cents each.

The price represents a price earnings ratio of 5.8 times.

Dalian Refrigeration dives in trade debut

Dalian Refrigeration's B shares plunged on its trading debut yesterday, underscoring investors reluctance towards mainland stocks following the region's financial turmoil.

It was the first B-share listing this year.

Traders said the Shenzhen stock traded below its issue price in the first hour of trading on heavy overseas selling.
