Frizzy frisee

You've probably eaten fris?e before, although you might not have known its name. The long, slender leaves - which are off-white at the stalk end and have green frilled, jagged tips - are almost always included in bags of mixed greens, adding a mild bitter flavour to a salad.

Pig out on pork

If the subject of Pork, Knife & Spoon (porkknifeandspoon .com) isn't obvious from the title, the picture of a bacon-wrapped pork chop (right) at the top of the page ought to do the trick.

Pinches of salt

I'm not sure how I missed reading Not Without Salt (notwithoutsalt.com) for such a long time but now that I've found it, I've been avidly looking back through the archives of the three-year-old blog. It was formerly known as Artisan Sweets - named after blogger Ashley Rodriguez's now-closed bakery in the American state of Washington.

Democracy calls or cooking courses, some decency is in order

You have heard of 'delay no more', a homonym for a rather rude Cantonese curse. Even a fashion accessories chain has been named after it.

Meow-face toast with chocolate ($8)

Rating: 2.5/5

Law: It looks cute but the chocolate favour is not rich enough. It's also a bit too sweet.

Ask Mr brain...all will be explained

How come birds in cold countries do not get frozen feet when they walk in the snow? Many birds do not get frozen feet because their feet do not have as much blood as their bodies.

Lentil soup

Lentil soup can range from the austere to the luxurious. I do not like the vegetarian versions - they are just too tasteless and boring. This recipe is flavoured with cumin seeds, bacon and ham, and topped with sweet fried shallots.

Because of the ham and bacon, this recipe does not need much salt; taste the soup just before serving and season as needed.

King of Pork brings home the bacon

DO not be misled by the current feud in Washington over trimming the nation's federal budget. What seemed to foreigners to be inconceivable - that the most powerful country's government should effectively shut down for a week - has in fact taken place numerous times in the nation's history.

Gordon brings home the bacon

IT is only fitting that someone with a name like Gordon Bacon should be involved with the international aid organisation, Feed The Children.

Bacon is currently working among the unfortunate young victims of circumstances in Bosnia.
