New health alert for travel to Philippines

Hong Kong health authorities yesterday issued a second travel alert in as many months warning Philippine-bound travellers against a bacterial infection.

The warning, against meningococcemia, a form of meningitis, followed Manila's declaration of the popular northern resort city of Baguio as a calamity zone amid an ongoing outbreak.

Car set ablaze in arson attack

An abandoned vehicle was set alight in an arson attack at a car park in Baguio Villa, Victoria Road, Pokfulam. Firemen found traces of petrol and burnt newspapers next to the vehicle. No one has been arrested.

Elderly cleaning pair claim exploitation

An elderly couple say they have been employed by government sub-contractors for the past two years without holidays or benefits.

The man, named only as Mr Ho, and his wife said they had each been paid $5,200 a month to clean two streets in Kowloon since March 1999. The couple claimed 30 or more colleagues in their district were employed under the same conditions.

Hong Kong's Wong Kam-po had another disappointing day at the office as his bid to retain the Centennial Tour of the Philippines title continued to falter in yesterday's 12th stage.

Baguio Villa sale fails to spark buying frenzy

The Government sold just 47 of the 120 surplus quarters in Baguio Villa, Pokfulam, despite cutting prices by as much as 25 per cent compared with the sale of an initial batch of units in December.

The Government Property Agency (GPA), which handles the disposal of surplus quarters, said $460.3 million was raised from the sales.

Sale of quarters at cut price

The Government is offering 120 surplus quarters in Baguio Villa, Pokfulam, for sale on a first come, first served basis on Monday at prices up to 9 per cent lower than last month's sale.

In a bid to boost sales, the Government Property Agency, which handles the disposal of surplus quarters, said the units would be sold at pre-determined prices by open tender.

Price cuts on agency agenda as sale flops

The Government is considering cutting prices of its surplus flats in Pokfulam after receiving just one bid for the latest tender of 40 units.

Government Property Agency chief property manager Francis Shum Kwok-sher said the sole bid for a unit in Baguio Villa had been accepted.
