Question of priorities in the balance

It looks on the surface like a piece of good news just when we could use some. Figures released last week show that our balance of payments in the first quarter almost doubled to HK$61 billion.

UK's trade deficit falls as exports rise sharply

LONDON: Trade trends remain encouraging after Britain's global trade deficit narrowed to GBP803 million (about HK$9.56 billion) in April from GBP1.21 billion in March.

A Treasury spokesman said the global deficit was the lowest for two years apart from a sharp downward blip to GBP387 million in August last year.

Authority needs Government help

THE Housing Authority may have had financial autonomy since 1988, but it relies heavily on the Hong Kong Government, which has a permanent capital stake in it of $26.3 billion.
