Foreign seafarers employed on vessels owned by non-Brazilian companies are not able to obtain 'visa number 5', causing them great difficulties, the Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) says.

It said the visas were being issued only to crew employed by Brazilian companies.

Bimco warns on Brazilian coastal trades

Tanker-owners in the Brazilian coastal trade are facing a deteriorating situation, with authorities demanding exorbitant fines for visa 'infringements', the Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) says.

It said owners also were barred from allowing their vessels to berth to discharge cargoes and crews had been denied permission to go ashore.

Standard clause for year-2000 problems

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) has drafted a standard clause addressing the year-2000 compliance obligations of charterers and owners.

'A vessel's year-2000 compliance is essentially a seaworthiness issue - an obligation that is already placed on the owners by the provisions of most voyage and time-charter parties,' Bimco said.

Bimco calls for Brazil to improve security after port pirate attacks

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) is urging Brazilian authorities and government ministries to improve security at ports to protect vessels from pirates.

Bimco pointed to an attack on a tanker at Rio de Janeiro on August 27 by seven pirates armed with automatic handguns and rifles while the vessel was alongside the Petrobas terminal.

Bimco course for Singapore

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) will hold a 'Towards Better Decision' training course in Singapore in co-operation with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore training division on October 7 to 8.

Course topics were selected after surveying Bimco's Asian members to ensure that this would be the most comprehensive Bimco course in Singapore.

Bimco issues manual on security

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) has issued a ship masters' security manual that provides 'the user with easily accessible, practical advice on preventing piracy, armed attacks, drug-smuggling and stowaways'.

Bimco said the guide also gave appropriate response measures should a ship fall victim to one of these maritime crimes.

The Baltic and International Maritime Council (Bimco) is warning ship agents to beware of scams involving illegal immigrants who pose as crew members.

In its latest report to members, Bimco said this well-organised scam, was difficult for an unsuspecting agent to discover, given its similarities to a genuine port call.
