President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive has brought hopes of long-overdue reform in officialdom. Over the Lunar New Year holidays, some government departments and state-owned enterprises reportedly cancelled or scaled back on over-the-top celebrations.

Officials from four different regions have told the South China Morning Post that the banquets have merely gone underground, where they are now being held in much more lavish style.

Cut size of banquets to save food waste

The food wasted at wedding banquets amounts to tossing out every dish served to three out of 20 tables of diners, on average, Friends of the Earth reported yesterday.

'We visited wedding banquets and found that the last few dishes, usually fried rice and noodles, are left untouched,' Michelle Au Wing-tsz, the green group's senior environment officer, said.

Chinese menus favoured for banquets

Most people want wedding banquets and many prefer Chinese over western menus, a survey says. Venue booking website ESDlife interviewed 1,075 people online who planned to tie the knot within three years and found that 95 per cent of them would like to have a wedding banquet. More than 81 per cent said they preferred Chinese banquets.

Inquiry into wedding banquet complaints

The Consumer Council has received more than 60 complaints from couples who had planned their wedding banquets at Club Regency, a Kowloon Bay banquet hall. The private club will close on March 31 after its landlord won a court application last week to evict the club for failing to pay two months' rent. The club can use the premises for pre-booked weddings until March 31.

Couples stage sit-in for wedding deposits

About 60 couples staged a sit-in at a fast-food shop in Kowloon Bay yesterday to demand the refund of deposits paid for wedding banquets.

That followed a breakdown in talks between representatives of the couples and Club Regency, the venue where their banquets will be held before March 31.
