Dominic Biggs

Dominic Biggs, editor of the South China Morning Post's Self section, has taken a four-month break to row 4,500km across the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of a two-man team entered in the Atlantic Rowing Challenge, Biggs will set off from Spain's Canary Islands on October 7 on a journey which will take him to Port Charles, Barbados.

Mainland diplomat takes up post

Cui Zhanqiao, a veteran diplomat, has been made deputy commissioner of Beijing's Foreign Ministry in the SAR, replacing Liu Hongxiao. Mr Cui, from Liaoning province, joined the Foreign Ministry in 1965 after college graduation. He has worked at embassies in the former East Germany, France, Barbados, Singapore and the United States.

Australia's tour match against West Indies moved to Antigua

Australia's tour match against West Indies A, scheduled for Barbados from March 20-23, has been moved to Antigua.

Kensington Oval in Georgetown is unavailable because it will be hosting the regional Busta Cup final between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados beat Jamaica by six wickets in a semi-final on Monday to secure a home-ground advantage.

The Barbados Ship's Registry has been formally recommended for ISO 9002 certification by Lloyd's Registry's quality assurance inspector.

New registry lists 50 ships

FIFTY vessels, totalling 210,000 deadweight tons, have been registered with the new Barbados Ships' Registry since its opening on July 1 last year.

Of these, eight were registered through Bridgetown, including five vessels in the under-500 gross registered tonnes (grt) category.
