Party on the beach

All 16 Miss Hong Kong contestants and celebrities including Stephy Tang Lai-yan, Yuen Li-ming, and Wong Hei, will take part in a beach volleyball and handball festival at Shek O main beach today.

Visitors can take part in workshops and demonstrations and watch celebrities challenge elite players.

Government sells Lantau residential site for $30.5m

Updated at 6.15pm: A residential site on Lantau was sold for $30.5 million ? more than double its opening bid ? on Tuesday afternoon at the first government land auction this financial year.

The 2,240-square-metre site is located in Cheung Fu Street, Cheung Sha, Lantau Island.

A government study comparing the city's beaches for the deadly bacteria E coli over the past 20 years has found most beaches are fine for a dip year-round.

More teams book place in fives finals

The lineup for the finals of the 2006 Nike Football Fives emerged at the weekend with 12 more teams qualifying from the Cheung Sha Wan district preliminary round.

The competition features 360 teams battling for a chance to contest the grand championship finals at Macpherson Playground, Mongkok, on April 8 and 9.

Man charged in connection with attack on policeman appears in court

Updated at 5.02pm: A 23-year-old man, who allegedly slashed a police officer in Cheung Sha Wan on Tuesday, appeared in court on Thursday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

The man was charged with wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, the spokesman said.

Boy critical after nearly drowning

A 10-year-old boy was fighting for his life after he almost drowned at a club house pool in Yuen Long.

The boy, surnamed Kwok, was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital by a lifeguard, where he yesterday remained in critical condition.

Police said the youngster had gone swimming with a relative at the club house of Grand Del Sol in Fung Cheung Road.
