Beard

Grow your own way

You'd have to be a fashion recluse to be unaware of the hair-icane that has taken men's grooming by storm.

Vanity cases

Rosey Chan Pianist / Creative Director

Classical musicians don't often venture past their genre's influence, let alone into the worlds of fashion and beauty - but Rosey Chan isn't your average Brahms and Beethoven performer.

Rare treat

It's been at least a year since I last saw a dragon's beard sweet seller on the streets of Hong Kong. Not as prevalent as, say, those selling roast chestnuts or gai dan jai (small, hollow, egg-shaped waffles), you could occasionally find such vendors in the crowded pedestrian areas of Causeway Bay, Central, Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok.

Producer Dan Le Sac and bearded vocalist Scroobius Pip (above) make up the band behind the provocatively titled hip-hop/electronica song Thou Shalt Always Kill, released by independent label Lex Records.

beauty buzz

There's nothing worse than razor burn and its accompanying red, lumpy rash. Avoid irritation and nasty nicks with the latest men's shaving products.

WHAT'S HOT

Rosettes

They are popping up everywhere and were seen at Phillip Lim and Marc Jacobs.

Turbans

Think of fashion icon C.Z. Guest or summers in Morocco for inspiration. Prada's satin version (right) rocks.

Anoraks

They replace winter parkas. We love the styles at Dries Van Noten and Marni.

Bubble house

This is surely one of the oddest houses you will ever see. The 'palais' was designed by Finnish architect Antti Lovag, who championed the bubble-house concept in the 1970s. It could be pretty difficult getting your head inside, let alone your whole body.

Rude city

Sometimes I wonder what tourists think of the people of Hong Kong, when they visit the SAR. I remember distinctly what my first impression of this city was. It can be summed up in one word - rude. One rarely hears magic words such as 'thank you' or 'sorry' or 'excuse me', in a place where most people are always in a hurry to get somewhere.

Music world hurly burly

ALL fans of live music are busy growing beards for the Folk Festival running from November 10 to 12. It is organised by the Hong Kong Folk Society chaired by a Liz Hurley. Could it be . . .? Hugh Grant's tight-lipped girlfriend did say she wanted to go off somewhere and think for a while.

Cardboard men could litter the campaign trail

WHEN the police were short of officers, they used cardboard cut-outs to deter thieves in department stores.

So do not be surprised if you find a few cardboard candidates greeting voters outside polling stations on September 17.

Tourists in town

SPOTTING two New Age travellers - regulation beard and scraggy hair in place - emerging from a travel shop off Nathan Road yesterday, we found ourselves walking in front of them and overhearing snatches of their conversation. ''No . . . no . . . the Romans just came across on land . . .'' we heard one say to the other as the passing traffic drowned their words.
