On a recent trip to Yunnan province to visit the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, I had the opportunity to stay with some locals I had met on an earlier trip. It was a beautiful place, dreamlike and lost in time. It was also a humbling trip; I felt quite ashamed of how little I know of China's geography compared with that of Australia, where I was brought up.

Dirt on hotel doesn't check out

Hong Kong has long boasted some of the world's finest and most exclusive hotels.

Now it can also lay claim to one of the dirtiest - according to a top travellers' website.

The Imperial Hotel, in Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, has been named the third dirtiest in Asia-Pacific by users of the internet travel site Tripadvisor.com.

Pest management beats the bugs

Bugs, say pest control experts, can make us very sick. Cockroaches spread germs associated with a host of illnesses from gastroenteritis and conjunctivitis to urinary tract infections, wound infections and meningitis. Rat fleas can transmit bubonic plague. Mosquitoes spread dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis. Bedbugs cause welts, swelling and sometimes allergic reactions.

But not all bugs are harmful, some serve as food for fish and other animals, while others at tack weeds and help farmers.
