Lederhosen, lunacy and litres of lovely lager

Last year, 40,000 revellers at the Marco Polo German Bierfest drank 40,000 litres of beer and ate 9,000 pork knuckles, 10,000 pretzels and 30,000 sausages. Organisers are hoping to break those records for the 20th anniversary of the Marco Polo hotel's take on Oktoberfest.

Raise a stein to celebrate Oktoberfest

From the German-themed beer displays in the city's 7-Eleven stores to traditional festivities at the Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel, local enthusiasm for Oktoberfest is hard to escape.

What began as a wedding celebration in a Bavarian city 200 years ago, has gone on to inspire a season of parties around the world, with Hong Kong joining the fun since the early 1990s.

I live in Orschweier, a quiet town near Freiburg and the Black Forest - where the cake is from - in southwest Germany. We get four very distinct seasons - but, of course, that could change with global warming.

Race-goers to get a taste of Germany as Oktoberfest arrives

Portly gents in leather shorts, slapping their thighs while playing the accordion, as beer girls with plaits twirl in dirndls, yodel and hold 16 pints of beer in each hand - just some of the traditional images you may have seen at the Munich Oktoberfest in past decades.

However, the Happy Valley version will be so much more refined.

Top of the hops

An oompah band is blowing a brassy tune through the streets of Munich's Old Town. It passes our table outside Munich's oldest brewery, Augustiner Brau. The band is quite a spectacle, with everyone dressed in traditional lederhosen shorts and braces, their brass instruments gleaming in the sunshine.

Different venue, same old revelry at this year's bierfest

There's a slight change to this year's Marco Polo Hotel German Bierfest. Don't worry, all the popular shenanigans will be in place as usual - the beer, sausages, pork knuckle, cheeky games and the Notenhoblers band - but the actual locale is just a bit further out on the sixth floor parking concourse.

Pubs and clubs roll out the barrels as thirsty supporters pour into town

It has been likened to a cross between Carnival in Rio and Munich's Oktoberfest.

And, as rugby lovers from across the globe poured into Hong Kong in preparation for the start of the Sevens tonight, beer suppliers were working overtime to get pubs and clubs ready.
