Wheelock loses legal fight

A marathon legal battle ended yesterday when Wheelock Marden & Co was ordered to pay 188.9 million Danish kroner (about HK$222.52 million) to a Danish finance firm for failing to provide full information before seeking loans from the company in the 1980s.

Bergesen orders bulk carrier

Bergesen dy ASA, a Norwegian shipping company, has placed a US$49 million order with South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co for a bulk carrier.

The ship, which measures 172,000 deadweight tonnes, will be chartered out to UK-based British Steel for 15 years immediately following the delivery, which is expected in the third quarter of 1998.

Bergesen, a Norwegian shipping company, has placed a US$49 million order with South Korea's Hyundai Industries Co for a bulk carrier.

Call to get academic view on post

Prominent businessman Dr Helmut Sohmen has proposed that academics' views be sought to set out clear criteria for the Special Administrative Region's chief executive.

In his latest letter to the foreign business community, Dr Sohmen suggested this could be a way to help spark public debate on the criteria for the top post.

HONG KONG'S most prominent Austrian, Dr Helmut Sohmen, has been presented with this year's award for 'Overseas Austrian of the Year'.

The Swarovski Crystal-Eagle Award was presented to him last month in Vienna by the International Association of Austrians Abroad.
