Britons may be fined, held under new passport rules

Britons and other foreign nationals living on the mainland are legally required to keep their passports with them. But under new British rules, citizens needing to renew their travel documents must send them to the regional passport processing centre in Hong Kong.

Frequent visitors to benefit from e-channels

The e-channel service, which has speeded up border crossings for Hong Kong residents, will be extended to frequent visitors next month.

Six new e-channels for people arriving in Hong Kong three times or more a year would be installed at the airport, the Immigration Department said yesterday.

Passport contract 'will go to tender'

The contract for printing SAR passports will be put out to tender, the Immigration Department has promised.

The assurance follows Beijing's decision to grant the lucrative printing job to the Hong Kong Commercial Safety Printing Company in late 1995, apparently without tender.

I am a permanent resident of Hong Kong who travels frequently. I prefer the Immigration Department's current policy of putting no chop on my passport.

More than 13,000 photographs sent in for SAR passports have been returned to applicants for failing to meet high-security requirements.
