The importance of being the chairman's wife

A Birkin for China

It may not be so well known that one of the curiosities of a mainland IPO is that the chairman's wife will frequently become the vice-president of a sub-branch of the local bank. The chairman of a Hubei company that went public cheerfully told that listing on the stock exchange was the means to a huge change in lifestyle for the chairman.

Six degrees

Noel Gallagher, who along with his High Flying Birds will be appearing in Hong Kong next month, has been banned from playing on the mainland for his part in a Tibetan freedom concert in 1997. Gallagher (below) admits to not knowing what many of his lyrics mean and says he has no idea what he was talking about when he wrote Don't Look Back in Anger. And what is a 'wonderwall' anyway?

Carry off your holiday essentials with bags of flair

There is a scene in the new Sex and the City movie when Carrie, upon arriving at the Abu Dhabi airport, tells the porter to be careful with her luggage as he puts it into a waiting Maybach. She fusses over a scratch on her expensive white trunk, which is understandable because after shelling out big bucks on a luxury suitcase, who wants it scratched and dented by baggage handlers?

Hermes flexed its masculine muscle at its Galleria boutique last month, with a Men's World soiree focusing on its new collection of travel luggage, sports accessories and men's items. The theme was the colourful Hermes tie, which each guest was asked to wear in an unusual way. Some wore it as a scarf, others turned it into a wrap.

The Waiting Game

IMAGINE THIS SCENARIO: a group of well-dressed executives are clustered around a conference table at the immaculate headquarters of a major fashion brand in Paris or Milan. In the middle of the table is a prototype of a new bag/boot/skirt/coat. It is exquisitely made and exorbitantly priced.

Fashion house sponsorship of art is a win-win situation: artists get the money they need to keep the creative juices flowing and fashion houses get to show their business isn't just about selling bags and skirts, it's also about 'creativity'.

In Hong Kong, face value is worth more than gold. It's probably the reason why, despite the economic downturn, I have spotted no shortage of BMW X5 sport utility vehicles on the streets and waiting lists for Hermes Birkin bags aren't getting shorter.

For those seeking stylish gift ideas, it's in the bag

WHY does a woman need to carry a bag when a man can get by with a pocket? And, is what she puts in her bag a hereditary thing? Do daughters carry in their bags the same things mothers carry in theirs? It will remain, forever, one of the mysteries of life. But, take it from one who carries a bag, we couldn't leave home without one.
