Fire at Tsueng Kwan O estate injures four

Four people were sent to hospital and about 100 others evacuated after fire broke out at a public housing block in Tseung Kwan O on Tuesday morning. One male resident suffered serious burns while three others felt unwell suffering from smoke inhalation. About 100 residents had to be evacuated to an open area on the ground.

Blazes like the one in Dhaka on Saturday are sadly all too frequent around south Asia. In September, in one of the worst incidents of its kind, 289 died in a fire in Karachi. The same month, 40 were killed during a blaze at a fireworks factory in the state of Tamil Nadu, in south India.

Trialled and tested, classy Happy Zero gets the all clear

Happy Zero yesterday appeased stewards and was passed fit for a run in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) on February 21 with a steady barrier trial over the straight 1,000m at Sha Tin yesterday.

Happy Zero was previously ordered to trial again after he was found to have mucus and traces of blood in his trachea after trialling behind Able One on January 19.

Blaze King can rise to the Bauhinia Sprint challenge

Trainer David Hall has put Blaze King's career back on track and the four-year-old should reward his handler by winning the Group Three Chow Tai Fook Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (1,000m) at Sha Tin today.

Blaze King (Brett Prebble) showed promise with his former trainer Tony Millard, winning his first three starts down the straight course in Class Three around this time last year.

Marine police arrested a man, 25, and seized HK$5.18 million worth of smuggled computer hard disks and components in his goods van in Sai Kung at about 2am. Smugglers were loading the goods from two vessels into the van when police swooped on them. About 10 smugglers escaped in two speedboats.

Inquiry into chemicals at fire site

Firemen who spent two hours fighting a huge blaze at an industrial centre in Tsing Yi on Tuesday night found 750 litres of dangerous chemicals, allegedly stored illegally, and a number of unauthorised structures.

They found 26 drums of bleach and four drums of acetic acid, each containing 25 litres, after breaking into a second-floor unit.

Restaurant torched after being raided

Updated at 2.48pm: A restaurant in San Po Kong was torched after being raided in an alleged burglary early on Thursday.

Dozens of residents fled from the six-storey commercial and residential block at Tseuk Luk Street shortly after 3.30am when the blaze broke out in the ground-floor restaurant.
