Thrombocytes or platelets are colourless blood cells that assist in blood clotting by forming plugs in blood vessel holes. A healthy person has between 150,000 to 400,000 platelets per microlitre of blood.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will return to work on Monday after a month-long absence caused by a series of health scares, including a blood clot in her head, the State Department said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton left a New York hospital after three days of treatment and is expected to make a full recovery from a rare blood clot in her head.

The 65-year-old diplomat was forced to spend New Year's Eve in hospital.
