Blue Notes: Wayne Shorter

Wayne Shorter

In the words of Blue Note Records president Don Was, Wayne Shorter is "one of the greatest musicians and composers of our time". There is not much room for argument with that.

Blue notes: Christmas jazz

Jeremy Monteiro

Although Christmas songs started playing in Hong Kong's shopping malls around mid-November, I hadn't felt particularly in the spirit until last Saturday when I flew to Singapore for pianist Jeremy Monteiro's "Jazzy Christmas! Duets" concert at the Esplanade Concert Hall, an annual tradition returning after a two-year hiatus.

Blues and rock virtuoso guitarist Joe Bonamassa coming our way

By the standards of the relatively uncommercial blues-based music he plays, Joe Bonamassa, who performs at Kitec in Kowloon Bay on Thursday, is riding the crest of a wave.

There is a long-established strain of political and social protest in the blues. Well-known examples include Lead Belly's Bourgeois Blues, J.B. Lenoir'sEisenhower Blues, and Big Bill Broonzy's Black Brown and White.

London is gradually getting over Andy Murray losing again at Wimbledon, and is increasingly focused on the Olympics, but the city is still finding time to celebrate a rock'n'roll milestone: the 50th anniversary - hard though this is to believe - of the formation of The Rolling Stones.

Market Calls

China Yurun Food Group (1068), which makes pork products, on June 27 responded to rumours by hosting an unscheduled analysts' briefing. The company was addressing talk that the short-selling specialist Muddy Waters was about to issue negative research on the firm. The company's share price fell 20 per cent on June 27, largely because of those rumours, and short-selling volumes spiked.

Short-seller sets his sights on china inc.

He does not have an office and his work experience comprises a short stint as a corporate lawyer before founding a self-storage business in Shanghai. Yet Carson Block, the 35-year-old American short-seller responsible for felling the share price of mainland timber company Sino-Forest has just become one of the most attention-grabbing commentators on corporate China.

Actor Hugh Laurie is best known to British audiences for his collaborations with Stephen Fry, and his appearances in assorted roles in Rowan Atkinson's Blackadder TV series. To everybody else he is the irascible Dr Gregory House. He is noteworthy as one of the few English actors able to sound consistently and convincingly American.

1. Happy Feet - Paolo Conte

I always enjoy Conte's gravelly voice and great lyrics. I always associate music with a time and a place - sadly, this track reminds me of Hong Kong during Sars.

2. Cosmic Girl - Jamiroquai

Clapton Eric Clapton (Reprise)

Eric Clapton's latest album isn't entirely bland, but this varied collection does lack edge. It eschews the grit of Delta blues for a jazzy New Orleans sound. The playing is top-notch and the sounds have been smoothed to perfection: the result is pleasant but rather boring.

Happy birthday on Wednesday to Joseph William 'Pinetop' Perkins, about to turn 97 and still sitting steady on his piano stool.

Perkins is a blues legend: a member for more than a decade of the Muddy Waters Band, he later formed the Legendary Blues Band with other alumni of the Waters ensemble, including drummer Willie 'Big Eyes' Smith.

The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions Howlin' Wolf (Chess)

American blues artists on visits to Britain began recording sporadically with British musicians in the late 1950s, but the sessions were generally for British release only and on the whole were under-promoted and sold poorly.
