Vietnam jails four men for arranging illegal migrant sea journeys

A Vietnamese court sentenced four men to up four years in prison for arranging two illegal sea voyages to Australia for more than 60 would-be migrants, a judge said on Wednesday.

Australia to boost Sri Lanka ties to stop boatpeople

Australia announced on Monday plans to boost intelligence sharing with Sri Lanka to try to halt a wave of boatpeople that has seen thousands arrive illegally on its shores this year.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr, who is in Colombo for a three-day visit, said he would discuss the idea during talks with leaders on how to deal with people-smuggling.

Bangladeshi rescuers on Thursday searched for 50 people still missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees heading for Malaysia capsized with 110 passengers on board, officials said.

Coastguards, the navy and fishermen have rescued about 60 people since the boat went down on Wednesday morning 15 kilometres off the southern district of Cox’s Bazaar.
