Jetfoil hit wreckage after captain took an old route

A jetfoil accident that left one person dead and more than 100 injured happened on a route being used for the first time in three years, an inquest heard yesterday.

Macau-bound jetfoil Flores had taken an old route because strong head winds along the regular route prevented it from accelerating, its captain told the Coroner's Court.

Jetfoil safety fears

I regularly visit Macau for the weekend and always travel by jetfoil, because the alternatives are beyond my budget or make me feel ill. However, on my last journey to Macau on Friday, May 1, on the 2.30pm sailing, I was disturbed to find that there were no seatbelts in either of the seats assigned to me and my husband in the jetfoil's economy class.

Jetfoil struck massive wreck, says fisherman

A fisherman said yesterday that he had seen the Far East Jetfoil crash into a sunken wreck on Saturday.

The claim came as Marine Department officials started investigating whether the wreck off Lantau was involved in the jetfoil accident which killed one woman and injured 119 other passengers.

Divers to examine wreck as jetfoil victim dies

Divers will examine a wreck today to determine whether it caused Saturday's jetfoil crash which injured 120 people.

The news came as Wan Yuen-lan died of head injuries sustained in the accident three kilometres west of Tai O.

The 77-year-old's death almost certainly means a coroner will investigate the crash as well as the Marine Department.

Seamen's courses cancelled

SAFETY courses for mariners are being cancelled through lack of interest.

The three-day courses cover first aid, evacuation and fire-fighting.

But they attracted only 54 crew members in the last academic year, compared to 97 the previous year and 189 when they started in 1991.

SIX passengers injured when a Hongkong-bound jetfoil hit a partially submerged dredging pipe on Sunday night are already seeking compensation from Far East Jetfoils, but the company has yet to take responsibility.

15 injured as jetfoil snags pipe

FIFTEEN passengers were hospitalised and dozens more hurt when a Hongkong-bound jetfoil hit a partially submerged dredging pipe shortly after it left Macau last night.

The Urzela left Macau with more than 200 passengers at 7.45pm and hit the pipe at the outer harbour 20 minutes later, throwing many passengers out of their seats.
