SIA to set jumbo record

SINGAPORE Airlines will go into the record books in October when it takes delivery of the 1,000th Boeing 747, according to a Boeing official. It will be SIA's 67th jumbo.

It was back in 1966 that Boeing announced it was going to build the 747, the world's largest aircraft.

Production of freighter at final stage

THE Boeing Co's first 747-400 freighter has entered its final production phase at the manufacturer's plant in the United States.

Orders for 16 of the cargo carriers have so far been received, including two from Cathay Pacific Airways.

GPA orders cancelled

IRELAND'S GPA Group, struggling to overcome a financial crisis, has persuaded three leading aircraft manufacturers to agree to the cancellation of some US$7 billion worth of planes on order, says a source.

The agreements with Boeing, Airbus Industrie, and Fokker would leave GPA, a huge aircraft leasing concern, with $4 billion of planes on order.

Third order

SEATTLE: Boeing Co has won its third firm order of 1993, 12 twin-engine 737 aircraft from Royal Air Maroc for about US$525 million.

Philip Condit, president of Boeing, said the order from Morocco ''will help build confidence throughout the airline industry at a time when it's really needed''.
